So come on down to Blitz Surf Shop where our friendly and knowledgeable staff will be on hand to help provide you with all your surfing, skating and fashion needs. It operated there for several years before briefly moving to Gladstone Rd and then to Wainui Road in 1980 where it can be found standing proudly today.
Pete Natrass was running the Natural Flight surfboard factory for Des before it was sold to Ray Dalton and continued to work there under the new ownership. Mike Spence also briefly worked for Des as the manager of the surf shop before Pete and his wife took over when Des sold the business to them. Pete then moved to Auckland to once again work with Des and produce Hot Buttered Surfboards which were shaped by Iain Ratso Buchanan. Mike Spence had moved to Auckland and started a surfing magazine but has now returned to the surf retail industry.
In 1986 Larry bought the New Wave surfboard factory and so Blitz started to stock New Wave surfboards until it was later sold. Blitz Surf Shop is the second oldest surf shop in New Zealand, the oldest in Gisborne, is a local icon and has been in existence long before all the major surf labels established themselves in New Zealand. In December 2009 local Euan Nelson returned home to Gisborne after being away for over 15 years, 9 of which were spent living in The UK and travelling the all over the place, to take over Blitz Surf Shop. The best part of getting involved in the surf industry for Euan was the chance meeting through business of the woman who he would later convince to move to Gisborne from Auckland and marry in February 2015, Tamera.
But most importantly, even with all this talk of work, we all intend to continue surfing !
