What you should know about Poverty Bay Kayak Club
Congratulations to the following athletes who have been selected to represent New Zealand in crew boats at the 2017 World Junior Under 23 Championships. Selection for K1 Boats will be confirmed post the 2017 New Zealand Sprint Kayak Championships. The International Canoe Federation ICF was founded on the 19th of January 1924 in Copenhagen, Denmark, and in 2002 the ICF designated the second Sunday in June as World Canoeing Day. In the 1982 World Championships Alan Thompson became the first New Zealand athlete to win a World Championship medal. Lisa Carrington was the most successful of the team winning the womens K1 200m race and bringing home the coveted gold medal making her the 6th Olympic medal winner in New Zealand's canoe sprint racing history.
In 1985 Ian Ferguson was made a Member Of The British Empire in the New Year Honours for his services and achievements in canoeing. He has been a NZ selector since 1998 and a member of both North Shore and Karapiro Clubs. He was a New Zealand representative in Surf Lifesaving , NZ representative in sprint kayaking and attended two Olympic Games in LA and Seoul. With over 15 years working in the sport and recreation industry, Matt is now working as Grants, Fundraising and Projects Manager for Surf Life Saving NZ focusing on funding and organisational development.
Matt also enjoys spending time with the family and when not taking the kids to all of their sporting activities enjoys surfing, fishing and cycling. He remains on several canoe sprint and surf life saving club, regional and national committees. In his spare time Mark is the team manager for the New Zealand Surf Life Saving Team, and he also enjoys spending time in the outdoors hunting, fishing and photography. She is qualified as an ICF International Canoe Sprint Official and her other sporting interests include netball and surf lifesaving.
Karen also enjoys supporting her family in their many varied sports and hobbies
